“Human-Led, AI-Driven” — Why Client Service Still Matters in Dental Marketing

Account manager Skylar Massengill joins Dan Brian to talk about what great client service looks like in the age of AI — and why a robot can’t look out for your practice the way a person can.

In the most recent episode of the Dental Marketing Mix, host and DentalScapes co-founder Dan Brian welcomed a very special guest: DentalScapes’ own Skylar Massengill. Skylar has been with the DentalScapes team for more than three years, starting in social media before growing into her current role as account manager — and she brought a perspective that doesn’t get enough airtime in the marketing world: what great client service actually looks like in the age of AI.

As Dan pointed out at the top of the show, client service isn’t a topic the podcast covers often — most episodes focus on fulfillment, strategy, and the marketing tactics themselves. But that’s exactly why this conversation matters. At the end of the day, an agency is accountable to its clients, and the relationship between a practice and its marketing team can make or break results.

From Behind the Scenes to the Front Lines

Skylar’s path to account management wasn’t an overnight leap. She spent her early years at DentalScapes managing social media for dental practices — a role that kept her behind the scenes but gave her a front-row seat to the personalities, preferences, and quirks of dozens of practices.

Over time, she worked her way into more client-facing responsibilities: leading communication, talking strategy, brainstorming solutions, and solving problems directly with practice owners and their teams. That gradual transition meant that by the time she officially stepped into account management, the trust was already there.

One thing she emphasized: getting to know a practice face-to-face is completely different from guessing at their “vibe” from a website. The dentist and team behind a practice can be totally different from what their online presence suggests — and understanding who they really are changes everything about how you market them.

What Separates Great Account Management from “Par for the Course”

So what actually distinguishes quality account management? For Skylar, it comes down to a few things:

  • Being a genuine friend and a good listener — not just a point of contact
  • Wanting the practice to succeed as much as the owner does — Skylar admits she sometimes gets more excited about month-end results than her clients do
  • Constant, accessible communication — phone calls, texts, and emails, not just a scheduled monthly touchpoint
  • Knowing clients as people — their teams, their families, their lives outside the practice

Dan contrasted this with what passes for client service at many agencies: a monthly PDF report (or a link to a dashboard), and a 24- to 48-hour turnaround when you email your account manager with a question. There’s no bus-throwing here — but the difference is real. DentalScapes builds in checkpoints throughout the month and encourages every account manager to spend 30 minutes on a monthly call with each client, because that face time matters.

AI Can Do a Lot. It Can’t Do This.

The conversation kept circling back to a theme that’s reshaping the entire marketing industry: automation and AI.

Dan was candid about it — DentalScapes has been leaning into AI since before ChatGPT changed the landscape, and there’s tremendous opportunity in applying it to marketing. AI does many things amazingly well, some of them better than humans can. The agency’s philosophy is to be AI-driven but human-led: use the technology aggressively where it excels, but keep human strategy, human oversight, and human eyes on everything, especially content.

Skylar put the human side of that equation plainly. A robot can’t look out for you the way a person can. You can tell an AI to pay attention, but is it really? More importantly:

  • An AI can seem like your friend, but it doesn’t have emotions and it doesn’t genuinely care
  • It doesn’t know — or care — that you’re a full-time practicing dentist with three kids and limited time
  • A human account manager sees that, remembers it, and builds it into the strategy for your practice

At DentalScapes, everything AI touches gets reviewed by a human. The team is constantly double-checking, correcting, and refining — so clients are never just dealing with a robot around the clock, even as AI accelerates the work behind the scenes.

There’s No One-Size-Fits-All in Dental Marketing

Asked what makes dental marketing distinct from other kinds of marketing, Skylar didn’t hesitate: no two practices are alike, and what works brilliantly for one may not work at all for another. You have to listen, get to know the practice, and understand what makes it unique.

Dan expanded on the point. Markets differ. Personalities differ. Practice philosophies and service mixes differ. And critically, goals differ:

  • Some practices want more implant cases; others are focused on Invisalign
  • Some are aiming to double production in two years
  • Others aren’t chasing growth at all — they just want to keep the chairs full and the schedule steady

Great account management means zeroing in on what a practice actually wants and applying strategy to that — not forcing every client into the same growth playbook.

Where Client Service Goes from Here

Looking a year out, Skylar — despite spending much of the episode making the case for humans — is genuinely excited about AI’s trajectory. It’s a powerful tool, just not the only tool, and the pace of change means the landscape will look dramatically different even twelve months from now.

Dan agreed: AI enables better reporting, better results, and ultimately better client service — when it’s paired with human knowledge and the human ability to distill mountains of data into a cohesive strategy. That combination is the future of client service at DentalScapes, and Skylar is helping lead it.

TL;DR

  • Client service is the overlooked half of the agency relationship — and it’s where many marketing agencies fall short, defaulting to monthly PDF reports and slow email replies
  • Skylar Massengill grew from social media into account management at DentalScapes over three-plus years, building client trust along the way
  • Great account management means genuine relationships, constant communication, and caring about a practice’s success as much as the owner does
  • DentalScapes is AI-driven but human-led: AI accelerates the work, but humans oversee strategy, review everything, and provide the attention a robot can’t
  • Dental marketing has no one-size-fits-all playbook — every market, philosophy, and growth goal is different, and strategy should match the practice
